Meadows Museum Exhibition Opening: Fortuny: Friends and Followers
May 26 - June 3
Mariano Fortuny y Marsal’s (1838-74) deft handling of light, vivid colors and loose brushwork produced a sensation in fin-de-siècle Paris, and influenced and inspired not only his fellow Spaniards, but also notable artists across the globe such as Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815-91), William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) and John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). This exhibition places Fortuny’s oeuvre in dialogue with notable works by these cosmopolitan friends, associates and contemporaries, and evaluates the effect of his work on artists from both sides of the Atlantic, on the market, and on European, American and Spanish art in the final third of the nineteenth century.
