How Did I Misspell Dispel?
I entered two spelling bees in my life, and I think of them every time I encounter the words I was eliminated on: nepotism and exchequer. (The former pops up a lot more often than the latter.)
I believe the word dispel will torment me in the same way, since I misspelled it on the front page of this week’s Park Cities People. What’s really frustrating is that I caught the mistake in the proofing process but then got distracted by something shiny and forgot to correct it.
The mistake came in a promo for our Q&A with University Park plastic surgeon Jim Thornton (pictured), who provided funny answers. Be sure to check it out.
(By the way, Thornton’s selection as a subject for our “A Walk in the Parks” feature had absolutely nothing to do with this incident. Purely coincidence.)

I decided to fill in an “i” for the “a” in 4th grade and came in 5th place. I still remember it as well.
For the record, I spelled Colonel correctly earlier in the bee, which I deemed to be the most difficult word in the whole contest.
Those kids on ESPN-2 would put both of us to shame.
