Bradfield Girls Win Lemonade War

Girls rule and boys drool. At least that’s what Bradfield Elementary darlings can say after winning a school-wide lemonade war.

If you saw lemonade stands popping up around the campus earlier this month and in January, and wondered what was going on, well it’s simple: The students were doing some hands-on learning by taking a page from a book they were reading and applying it to everyday life.

Bradfield Elementary families were reading The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies for their One School, One Book selection. The book is about a brother and sister competing to raise the most money with their lemonade stands.

Bradfield’s OSOB committee decided to use the Lemonade War concept to start a friendly competition.

The girls’ team won.

Combined, Bradfield students raised $7,300 in three weeks. The girls raised $3,897 of that.

All money raised will be donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a national childhood cancer foundation dedicated to raising funds for research into new treatments and cures for all children battling cancer.

One School, One Book is a program started by Read to Them, a nonprofit organization promoting family literacy, to encourage reading together at home. The program is made possible by contributions from the Bradfield Dad’s Club and the Bradfield PTA.
